If you have children who love playing sports or going to sporting events, then you will definitely want to check out the United Heroes League! They offer opportunities to all military, whether your surviving families, active duty, or veterans. I first heard about this organization through social media when they were offering free hockey equipment to military families. My son had sparked an interest recently to try hockey, so I joined the mailing list. While I was scrolling their website, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was posted to attend the 2020 NHL All Star Game. I applied, nominating my late husband since he was an avid hockey fan. I didn’t think much about it after that, but a few weeks later, to my surprise, I received a call from Boston Bruins Defenseman Torey Krug — I had been selected to attend. I was in shock, and for the first time since the tragedy, I was excited about attending a public event with my son.
The all-expense paid weekend was full of hockey, kid-friendly events, and even hanging out in the lounge with the NHL players and their families. But the best part of this experience to me was making memories with my son and personalized memorabilia we were given, honoring my late husband. I will cherish the memories and the gifts forever.
Here is the article honoring my late husband and the four heroes who attended the 2020 All Star Game courtesy of United Heroes and NHLPA: https://www.nhlpa.com/news/1-20742/your-2020-all-star-heroes.
Much love and gratitude,
Erica
